NewsCodes
= Metadata Taxonomies for News
The IPTC creates and maintains sets of concepts - called a controlled vocabulary or a taxonomy - to be assigned as metadata values to news objects like text, photographs, graphics, audio- and video files and streams. This allows for a consistent coding of news metadata across news providers and over the course of time - that's the reason why we call them IPTC NewsCodes.
This NewsCodes section of the IPTC Developer Site provides tools for and updates on the maintenance of the Descriptive NewsCodes (= Media Topics, Genre, Scene Codes, Subject Codes, World Region)
- a user guide for the IPTC Controlled Vocabulary server at http://cv.iptc.org/newscodes/
- a form for proposing new terms or a change to an existing term
- a list of approved changes
- on www.newscodes.org: overview of all existing NewsCodes vocabularies
- on show.newscodes.org: visualisation of the taxonomies as a tree
